Top tips to support your child's development

Literacy:

  • Read books, point to the words, encourage your child to help you to turn the pages and ask questions.
  • Retell stories together. ( use props) 
  • Sing songs and use actions.
  • Practise name recognition and letter formation (focus on letters in your child's name).
  • Summer term- watch our Read Write Inc clips on what sounds we are learning. 
  • Spot rhyming words 
  • Make up songs and rhymes 

 

Physical Development (gross motor skills):

  • Throwing, catching and kicking balls.
  • Riding a bike, trike or scooter.
  • Running, jumping, hopping and skipping.
  • Balancing on one leg.
  • Dancing

 

Physical Development (fine motor activities to help strengthen hands and fingers):

  • Playdough (pinching, rolling, using rolling pins, cutters or scissors).
  • Threading (you could use string and pasta tubes).
  • Drawing, painting, writing and colouring.
  • Playing with small fiddly toys like lego or small figures.
  • Finger rhymes (Incy Wincy Spider).
  • Make sandwiches allowing children to use knives to spread butter.
  • Using clothes pegs ( building dens) 

 

Maths:

  • Play board games counting the spots on the dice and moves along the board (Orchard games are good).
  • Sing number rhymes and use fingers to represent the amounts.
  • Look for numbers on packets, in books and on doors.
  • Name shapes and find shapes.
  • Practise counting 
  • Cook together (weighing ingredients).

  • Go for walks (discuss road safety, directions, seasons and senses).
  • Visit the playground (play, exercise and socialise).
  • Visit the shops (write lists together and pay using coins).
  • Dance to music or even create your own music!
  • Discuss senses (what can you hear, see, touch, taste and smell?)
  • Dress up, create your own stories and imagine!
  • Toilet training.
  • Build models with construction toys or junk modelling!
  • Play and have fun!
