What happens after the Read Write Inc Programme?
In Year Two, once the Read Write Inc programme has been completed children move on to RWI literacy and language. Alongside this, children in Year Two complete reading sessions using our DERIC the APE approach. We teach and model these skills to support our children with reading. These DERIC reading skills are embedded in all of our whole class reading skills sessions in Year Two up to Year Six. The symbols and terminology appear on all the resources used in each pupil's Read and Response book and teachers refer to them every day. 'Real books' and text extracts are carefully chosen to ensure that our pupils are exposed to a range of rich and diverse texts, authors, poets and illustrators.
DERIC the APE stands for:
D: Decoding words
E: Explaining new vocabulary
R: Retrieving information
I: Interpreting information
C: Choice (choices made by the author)
A: Answer
P:Prove
E: Explain
How will I know how well my child is doing?
We aim to keep you informed of your child’s progress through parent’s evenings. If we feel your child needs extra 1:1 or small group support with their phonics and their reading, we will let you know how we are supporting them in school.
What can I do to help?
Please read with your child as much as possible, this greatly supports their progress in school. At Ivington we love to celebrate reading success, children are rewarded for reading regularly in school and at home with a book prize in reward assembly.
If you have any concerns about reading and your child’s progress please contact your child's class teacher. Children are all different and won’t learn to read at the same rate and pace, it can take some time for children to learn how to segment or blend sounds. Your continued support makes a great difference.
