Here at Ivington CE Primary School Citizenship is part of PSHE. It is integrated into our Values Education as well as being part of topic work and school life. For example, the older children have the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility to help in the organisation of the school day. Children from Year 1 upwards elect representatives of the School Council. They meet weekly and become involved in fund raising activities such as the Christmas Fayre, the proceeds of which support St. John’s Church. The children are aware of the needs of others and we have special activities for Children in Need, Sport’s Relief and Comic Relief. In addition we participate in one-off events, such as helping ex-pupils raise money to build a playground for children in Uganda. The children were then able to see how their efforts had improved the lives of others.
As part of the curriculum in history the children learn how democracy began. They discuss how we are governed and are kept up to date with current affairs through watching and discussing ‘What’s in the News?’
