Art and Design

Here at Ivington CE Primary School Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Art is taught both as a specific subject and through work related to class topics, involving experimentation in a variety of mediums and materials.  Art contributes to the development of observational skills, the ability to record visual images, the ability to interpret these visual images and to transform materials into visual representations and 3D objects.  Children are made aware of the work of artists, craft workers and designers and are taught to comment on their own and each other’s work in a positive way.

Art can be a great means of communication and can help children with their expressive skills.  Our pupils are given the opportunity from the very beginning of their school life, to apply ICT in their studies of art.  Most of all we believe that art can enhance a child's enjoyment of life and enrich many experiences. We arrange regular opportunities for the children to develop their skills working with artists in school workshops. In particular, we have developed regular links with local artists and craftspeople, the potter - Jon Williams, and Eek Batik, who both run workshops for the whole school, culminating in large permanent murals displayed around the school. We take the children to visit The National Gallery in London as part of a residential trip.
